During a guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night, John Oliver playfully admitted that part of him was rooting for chaos at Sunday’s Emmys. This year's most-talked-about Emmy moment was when Stephen Colbert accepted the award for Outstanding Talk Series for The Late Show, the show's first-ever win in the category, just two months after CBS announced its cancellation.
Although Jimmy Kimmel Live! was also nominated, Kimmel himself had urged Emmy voters to support Colbert. Oliver quipped that the "funniest thing to happen would have been if you had won," to which Kimmel agreed, laughing.
Kimmel shared an anecdote about a momentary mix-up where it seemed like his show had won, which briefly unsettled him. Oliver joked about the potential backlash Kimmel might have faced if he had won instead of Colbert, imagining boos or even being stoned on stage.
Fortunately for everyone, except perhaps Oliver's mischievous side, Colbert's victory was celebrated without any such drama.
