Your arts and culture recommendations for the weekend, by the residents of Benefits Street

STARS of the infamous Channel 4 documentary have had their say about the budget, but they also have plenty of cultural suggestions for the weekend. Here are their picks:

White Dee: My Neighbor Totoro stage play

White Dee is enchanted by the magical adaptation of Studio Ghibli's classic, praising the puppetry and expressing her sympathy for the theatre staff who frequently see her family there.

Doris Peynado: Stranger Things season five

Doris recommends ignoring snooty critics and diving into the latest season of Stranger Things, which she describes as more than just 80s nostalgia. Despite streaming it through a sketchy site, she loves the epic plot and character development.

Imjad Afsar: Shadow Ticket by Thomas Pynchon

Imjad, while noting the book's derivative nature, finds it a worthy read for a jobless afternoon, accompanied by a packet of Hobnobs. It's not Pynchon's best, but it's his first since 2013.

Black Dee: The Turner exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery

Black Dee highlights the timely celebration of Turner's 250th birthday, lamenting missing out on a course but looking forward to workshops and performances. She's even donned her finest tracksuit for the occasion.

‘Fungi’: Frankenstein

'Fungi' is captivated by Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Frankenstein, appreciating the added pathos to the Creature's tale. While the plot liberties may irk purists, it's a better alternative to illicit substances according to him.
