He jokingly pulled out his résumé on the Emmys stage Sunday night—but backstage, when asked about his future plans, Stephen Colbert said he has “nothing else” on his mind beyond his final nine months on The Late Show, adding, “I want to land this plane absolutely beautifully.”
Colbert’s remarks came after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won its first-ever Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series.
“I love what we do,” he told reporters in the Emmy press room. “I want to go to work on Tuesday, and for the next nine months, with these people—and work hard, but have fun.”
“You know, we do the show with each other. We do the show for each other every day, and then I have the privilege and the responsibility at the end of that day to share with the audience what we did. And I know it’s coming to an end in May, but I’m going to savor every day of it. You know, I want to land this plane absolutely beautifully, and I’ve got nothing else on my mind.”
The Late Show has received 30 Emmy nominations over its first ten seasons but hadn’t won once until this year, when it took home wins in both categories in which it was nominated: Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series and Outstanding Talk Series.
Colbert and his team will have one more shot at Emmy gold in September 2026, when The Late Show’s eleventh (and final) season will be eligible.
