Britain's reputation for humor has taken a hit as a new international ranking places the UK in 18th position among the world's funniest countries. The study, which aimed to find the 'funniest nation,' was topped by the Czech Republic, renowned for its self-deprecating humor.
Portugal snagged the second spot, followed by Ireland, Belgium, Chile, Greece, and Australia. In a surprising twist, the United States found itself in 29th place, leaving only the Philippines behind.
The study used the Humour Styles Questionnaire, designed by humor psychology expert Rod Martin, to survey over 6,000 respondents across 30 countries. It highlighted the Czech Republic's mastery of dry, deadpan humor and Portugal's blend of warmth and wit.
Australia, known for its sarcastic and direct humor, ranked 7th, while Ireland shone for its 'affiliative and self-enhancing humor'—the kind that brings people together through shared laughter.
In the realm of 'affiliative humor,' South Africa led the way, with Ireland and Portugal following closely. The study also examined 'self-enhancing humor,' which helps people stay optimistic, where South Africa again ranked first, alongside the Philippines and the United States.
Hungary was noted for its 'aggressive humor,' characterized by sarcasm and ridicule, while the Czech Republic also excelled in 'self-defeating humor,' which involves poking fun at oneself.
