Last Week Tonight Extends Emmy Writing Streak to 10 Years

HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver continued its dominance at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night, winning Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series for the tenth consecutive year at the 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

With this win, Last Week Tonight becomes the most-awarded show ever in the category, surpassing The Daily Show, which has won nine times. The victory extends a streak that began in 2016, making Oliver’s show one of the most consistently decorated in Emmys history.

In recent years, the field has shrunk to just a handful of nominees, reflecting the dwindling number of variety shows on the air. This year, Last Week Tonight beat fellow nominees The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live to hold onto its crown. The moment came after the show had already accepted the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series earlier in the evening, marking its second trophy of the night.

All told, Last Week Tonight has now won 32 Primetime Emmy Awards from 72 total nominations.

Accepting the Writing award, senior Last Week Tonight writer Daniel O’Brien struck a wry note about the current state of late-night political satire. “We are honored to share [this award] with all writers of late-night political comedy, while that is still a type of show that's allowed to exist,” O’Brien said, while a beaming John Oliver stood just behind him.
