SUNRISE, FL – The Florida Panthers have outplayed the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final, marking the second consecutive year both Florida and Calgary celebrate a Cup victory over Edmonton.
Local fan Marco Hildebrandt expressed joy over the Panthers' win, stating, "I’m happy my team, anyone other than the Oilers, won. Seeing the Oilers lose for two straight years feels as good as seeing the Flames win…I’d imagine."
Another fan humorously rejected the idea of supporting a rival Canadian team, quipping, "Would Boston Pizza have told us to ‘put aside our differences’ during World War II?"
Former Calgary Flames players, Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk, were pivotal in Florida’s win, with Bennett being awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for his outstanding performance.
In a light-hearted jab, Bennett mentioned, "I’m proud to support Calgary without having to actually live there. I’d say I’ll be thinking of the city while I’m enjoying the beach in mid-February, but we all know that would be a polite lie."
Calgary plans a co-belligerents victory parade, featuring a photo of a disheartened Connor McDavid, Edmonton's star player.
Flames captain Mikael Backlund relished the irony, saying, "I get to celebrate the Cup without all the agonising work of actually participating in playoff hockey for two months. That’s a win-win in my books."
The Flames organization humorously noted their lack of interest in winning a Stanley Cup themselves, preferring to assist other teams in defeating their rivals instead.
Flames chairman Murray Edwards jokingly remarked, "Deep playoff runs encourage binge drinking and poor sleep, which I can’t condone. But we’ll help other fanbases shoulder the burden."
At press time, Flames fans were already eagerly anticipating a potential historic threepeat.
