Australians found themselves unexpectedly dragged into the US-Iran conflict after it started messing with two of their most cherished cultural cornerstones: sports and petrol prices. Initially, the news of US strikes on Iran was overshadowed by the much more critical happenings on the Kyle and Jackie O show. However, as petrol prices skyrocketed past two dollars a litre, Aussies began to suspect that this time, it wasn’t just Sandilands to blame.
The reality hit home for Newcastle physio Ryan Berger while watching the Matildas play against Iran at the Women’s Asia World Cup. The sight of Iranian players saluting during their national anthem prompted him to dig deeper. "That's when I scrolled down four pages on news.com and found out there's actually a war going on. Who knew!" he proclaimed in disbelief.
Upon realizing that the escalating prices at the petrol station and the stakes in football were due to the US starting a war with Iran, Ryan was adamantly opposed to Australia’s role in the conflict. "It's completely un-Australian to let people get hurt in the name of football. That's more of a FIFA thing," he quipped.
So far, Australia has shown minimal support for the war, limited to offering some military aircraft. However, geopolitics experts predict the Prime Minister might reconsider if the price of beer is affected next.
